Wednesday Rules of Drawing

Wet messy play with Alex – actually rules of drawing. We listened to a variety of sounds and made marks in response. We were encouraged to work differently to our norm with different materials and to possibly close our eyes. It was a glorious session. The freedom to play with materials felt wonderful. To know that we weren’t going to be criticised or challenged about our output. By closing my eyes and concentrating the sounds suggested marks and colours. I chose to use my father’s conte crayons which I would usually avoid because I perceive a lack of control over

them. However the results were intense colour with soft marks

that I enjoyed and will use again. I was also surprised at the narrative that appeared from the sounds and my marks. The sounds of fireworks evoked gunfire and I responded with red ink and tears. Clearly trying to avoid thinking about the horro

r that the Ukraine is experiencing just now is not working. The sense of death and decay and cruelty is palpable. The encroachi

ng autumn and my father’s decline all consolidate this feeling of the end of things. The task in hand is to gather what can be saved and can be useful to future generations for the rebirth and regrowth that will follow.

Lunchtime speaker programme in science building – talks by arts organisations across Dundee. The curator from DCA was good to listen to. He talked about supporting artists rather than developing his own curatorial practice. Which of course he cannot avoid. Any stance that he takes and adopts will be his curatorial practice. Surely a more interesting description would embrace his role and actions and for him (and the showing artists) to describe the dynamic and the impact of an artist led curatorial model.

Must go and see the Manuel Solano The Top of Each Ripple at the DCA

Generator sounded full of energy and vigour with great exhibitions. Need to see the George Finlay Ramsay Film Have requested to join the 16mm workshop on 3rd November
