As always the Wednesday morning session with Alex is a pleasure. We perch on stools in a circle. It is an opportunity to say hi to the students who normally hide in the shadows. There is a lot of chat about how the rest of the semester will pan out. Alex sounds encouraging on the subject of our progress. She reiterates that we are bringing together our practical and conceptual considerations. (or as Tania would put it, the ‘why and the how’) We have only a few weeks left of the Grounding semester before assessment. Everything is passing so quickly, I make a mental note to myself to get some more stuff out into the world so that I can then work on top of it or forget it but at least I can move on. There is a general discomfort in the room as we all mentally review our progress and wish we had more resolution in our work.
Some of us run over to the lecture theatre to hear Jackie Donachie talk about her work. I enjoy her presentation and her work. Some of her public art pieces are deceptively simple and very satisfying in concept. I am particularly taken with a concrete heated disc that people can sit on in all weathers.
